Canon Collins Trust and University of London Scholarship for Distance Learning 2023

The University of London was first established in 1836 by the Royal Charter for the benefit of the public. Over time, the University has offered students a wide range of academic opportunities that are easily accessible. The University of London is a leader in education and was the first to admit students, regardless of their gender, religion, or race. In 1985, the University was also the first to give students the opportunity to study wherever they are- this provided access to higher education all over the world.

Canon Collins Trust was established in 1981, today, it is a community of activists and researchers with the aim to create change and social impact. The trust was established by Canon John Collins, who was famous for social movements such as Christian Action, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and the British Anti Apartheid Movement. The Canon Collins Trust focuses on both human rights and education with the aim of empowering individuals living within the Southern African society.

Eligible Fields

Canon Collins Trust is inviting students from South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, to apply for scholarship funding, for distance learning at the University of London.

The Scholarship covers studies towards Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and/or the Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of London, via distance learning.

What Does Canon Collins Trust and University of London Scholarship for Distance Learning Cover?

Four (4) scholarships will be awarded by the University of London International Programmes, and will cover the following expenses: full tuition fees and examination entry fees.

Students can start at any level and are NOT required to complete the entire programme (e.g. applicants may start at Postgraduate Certificate level and work their way to the LLM, or they can stop after completing the PG Certificate). Students who have completed an undergraduate degree can start at LLM level, without completing the PG Certificate and Diploma).

Scholars must complete their studies within 1 to 5 years, with a minimum of 2 modules to be completed per year. Scholars will be able to continue the course if they maintain satisfactory progress and academic reports. Applicants can read the Postgraduate programmes in Laws prospectus here.

Selection Process

Scholars will be selected by the University of London International Programmes and the Canon Collins Trust. Candidates will receive the final outcome of their application by August 2023 (please do not email to follow up on your application).

Scholars will be selected based on academic merit, work experience, financial need and the potential to positively contribute to the future of southern Africa. Applicants will be assessed on the information supplied in their application, including:

  • Academic Record and References: completed an undergraduate degree in any field, if apply for LLM studies, and excellent references.
  • Work Experience: preferably candidates should demonstrable continuity between their current
    profession, career ambitions and this field of study.
  • Relevance: candidates should be able to explain why this course is in line with their ambitions to make a difference in their sector. Applicants must clearly state their intended area of
    specialisation.
  • Leadership Competencies: applicants must be able to demonstrate how they have developed their leadership skills in the workplace, academia or in their personal life.
  • Commitment to Country/Community: preferably candidates should show a desire to be part of and to contribute to the future prosperity of southern Africa.
  • Application: candidates should demonstrate a good command of the English language, provide all information required in the application and submit their application and documents on time.

Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

General requirements:

  • You must be a national or have refugee status in South Africa, Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe
  • You must reside in one of the above countries
  • You must have completed the necessary qualifications for admission to the programme
  • You must be currently employed (full time or part time)
  • You must be able to commit to 10 hours of study per week (minimum)

Note: applicants do NOT have to be admitted to the programme before applying for the scholarship, but applicants will be required to apply for admission if they are selected for a scholarship. Apply for admission here.

Requirements for the LLM entry point – you must have 1 of these:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) qualification with second-class honours from the University of London
  • Second-class bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with at least half the units being law-related subjects
  • Passed the Bar Vocational Course (BVC) of England and Wales or the Qualifying Exam of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority of England and a second-class bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Completed the Common Professional Examination or Graduate Diploma in Law and a second-class Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Qualified as a solicitor or barrister in Wales, England or equivalent in another country

Requirements for the PGDip entry point – you must have 1 of these:

  • Second-class bachelor’s degree or equivalent from the University of London or any other acceptable institution
  • Master’s Degree

Requirements for the PGCert – you must have 1 of these:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from the University of London or any acceptable institution
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience (e.g. banking, accounting, insurance, or finance)

English language requirements:
During the programme, the candidate will be required to have a strong command of the English language. Candidates must have achieved 1 of the following within the past 3 years:

  • (IELTS) International English Language Testing System with an overall score of 6.5 and 6 in the written test (minimum scores)
  • (TOEFL) Test of English as a Foreign Language with an overall score of 92 (with 22 in the Reading and Writing sub-tests) and 20 in the Speaking and Listening sub-tests (minimum requirements)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) with an overall score of 59 and 59 in both Writing and Reading elements and a 54 in Listening and Speaking elements (minimum scores)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (with a minimum of a grade C)
  • Duolingo: must achieve an overall score of 120 or more

Computer requirements:
The Postgraduate Laws programmes offer provisions that are fully electronic. Candidates must have full and excellent internet access, however, should this not be the case, the candidate can make a case with the programme director who can offer printed copies of the basic learning materials.
